Lucky People Who Have Tried Our Cupcakes!

I decided to take pictures of friends who have tried our cupcakes! Enjoy!

PEPPERMINT CUPCAKES!

Greg

Cinnamon Toast Crunch

Eric

Rob & Jason

Yum!

Melanie and I finally had a chance to get together to do one of our favorite things.. Can you guess?

Baking Cupcakes! Of course! :)

We decided on making Cinnamon Toast Crunch cupcakes that turned out pretty amazing! We brought these cupcakes to work the next day for our coworkers to try. They were definitely a success considering the cupcakes were gone in a few hours.

These cupcakes are definitely a breakfast treat, it's a cinnamon toast cake with a cinnamon filling, topped with cinnamon vanilla frosting.

We agreed that the cupcakes were one of our top favorite cupcakes we've baked so far! And we hope to get together to bake some more cereal flavored cupcakes!

Also, I recently baked a batch of Chocolate Cake Cupcakes w/ Cookie Dough filling and Butter Cream Frosting for my roommate Rosalie, who just got back from Africa. They were definitely a success as well!

New Cupcake Bakery in Chicago!

A new bakery in the Block37 mall just opened in Chicago not too long ago. The bakery is called Magnolia Bakery and it was originally opened in New York City’s Greenwich Village. They are infamous for their delicious cupcakes and other yummy treats. And last Friday, my roommate Rosalie and I finally had a chance to try out what the new Chicago chaos was about.

Before I made my visit, I did the usual review look up on Yelp.com. And what I found was that the Chicago location wasn’t rated that well compared to the original one in New York City. It had a lot of negative reviews rather than positive. And a few friends of mine that have already been there, pretty much had the same negative response as well. So I wanted to just check out this place myself.

At the Block37 mall, most stores have two entrances, one through the mall and one through the front (outside on State St.). In the reviews, someone mentioned about these entrances and how it might be a little confusing. The line forms through the front entrance, so when you go through the mall entrance you might think the line starts as you enter. Rosalie and I were already in the mall; we came through the mall entrance and like how the reviews said it was confusing! As we entered, there was a long line wrapped around towards the front. And walking down, people may give you mean looks thinking you are going to cut them in line!

As you wait, you get to see the many employees bake the cupcakes. The line wasn’t too bad but when we finally were about to order, we noticed that none of the cupcakes were labeled. Not only that, but there were not that many flavors to select from, and most of them were plain flavored cupcakes.

We asked this one lady behind the counter to inform us the kinds of flavors they had today, and she seemed like she wasn’t aware of the flavors. She talked really softly and every time she would name a cupcake, she would turn her head slightly to the side, as if she didn’t know what she was talking about. We asked her what type of flavor was the icing on one cupcake and I swear she responded, “Its icing.” Rose and I told her to speak up but she clearly was not very knowledgeable of the cupcakes. Finally, another worker that was just frosting a new batch of cupcakes came to the front and gave us a brief description of each cupcake. She was much more helpful than the other lady, and knew what she was talking about. Honestly, if you work at a bakery or any place in fact, you should know your product well. Otherwise, don’t stand there behind the counter and think that nobody will ask simple questions like that, especially when there is no labeling on the cupcakes.

Anyways, Rosalie chose two cupcakes: plain chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting and ‘the hummingbird’, which was a banana cake with cream cheese frosting and pecans on top. I, too, bought the hummingbird and I decided to try their banana pudding, on the reviews many people had recommended it. I was a little disappointed because I really was hoping to try their pumpkin cupcake, but they didn’t have any that day. Each cupcake was pretty pricey for the size you get. Plain cupcakes are $3.00 and specialty cupcakes are $3.50. The small banana pudding was $4.50, it also comes in a large size too (not too sure the price of that).

When we were paying, Rose and I had separate cashiers, and of course my cashier was so rude. She didn’t even have a smile on and all I felt was a very unfriendly vibe. My total came up to be almost $10. I honestly was so irritated at that point that I only hoped for the cupcake to be at least okay. The bakery had mini tables spread throughout the bakery, and luckily we were able to find a spot to sit at. To my surprise, I actually really liked both things that I chose. The banana cupcake was very moist and the cream cheese frosting helped to add flavor to the cupcake. I also really liked how they topped it with pecans too. The banana pudding was delicious! It came in a small ice-cream shaped container that was filled up and enough for two people. At first, the pudding looked almost like frosting, but as I placed that spoonful in my mouth, I was in heaven. It was a sweet, but not too sweet dessert. It had the right texture, and was very filling. Rose’s on the other hand, her chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting was not good at all. The cake was very dry and fell apart very easily. Even just peeling off the cupcake liner, it looked dry. The frosting, however, was very light and not the usual thick frosting. Rose actually liked the frosting part, but I thought since the cake was too dry, they should have added more frosting to it since the frosting was not as heavy.

Overall, Rose and I decided that out of the two, the ‘the hummingbird’ was definitely our favorite. I would probably recommend the specialty cupcakes, rather than the plain ones. They didn’t really have much of a selection to choose from. There were probably like 5 different flavors to choose from, and only one or two specialty cupcakes. I would rate my visit a 2.5 out of 5. I gave it half stars because the customer service was very poor but the cupcakes I bought were all right. I don’t think I wouldn’t necessary recommend this place to anyone and it’s definitely not worth the wait either. This place is always busy and disorganized. I wonder how long the lines will take to eventually cool down.

Well until next time cupcake lovers!

Summer Cupcake Contest

A few months ago, my friend from school sent me a link to a Jelly Belly Cupcake Challenge, which was a contest where you decorate a cupcake(s) using Jelly Belly jelly beans and submit it for a chance to win $10,000! Melanie and I decided it would be a great opportunity to test out our decorating skills. So this week or sometime soon, we will begin our challenge and hopefully these cupcakes will turn out pretty! Keep a look out on a new video, pictures, and blog posts. We hope you guys support and vote for us! :)

SUMMER! :)

Last weekend was my best friend's 20th birthday and I (Nancy) decided it was a great idea to bake her some good old cupcakes, of course! Since we were planning on drinking champagne that night, I thought it would be very appropriate to make her the strawberry champagne cupcakes. (Pictures will be posted soon) I was so excited to bake them all week, and in the end they turned out pretty amazing!!! I love the recipe and will surely be making some more soon! The best part out of all of this was that finally a lot of my friends and coworkers had a chance to try them too, and to my surprise they loved it.

On the side note, the birthday was a success and we all had a great time! The next day I had to go to work and right before my lunch break I saw that there was a cupcake truck outside the window. Nope, it definitely was not Flirty's cupcakes (if that's what you guys are thinking). It was a green truck that had black bold writing that read, "CUPCAKES FOR COURAGE". I was pretty pumped and ready to try the new cupcake truck! Once I was on break, I went over and saw that they had about 5 flavors to choose from: Pink Velvet, Black and White, Vanilla, Strawberry and Dreamsicle. While waiting in line, I was contemplating on which flavor to choose from either Pink Velvet or Strawberry? Since I already had made strawberry flavored the night before, I decided to try the pink velvet. As it was my turn to order, there were two ladies in the truck. I asked them about their business and if they were newbies. They replied saying they were from a suburb called Elmhurst, which is actually near from where I am originally from. They said that they are new to this business and it was their second day in the city, so it was pretty exciting! I got a chance to tell them that my best friend and I blog about cupcake bakeries in Chicago, and they jotted down our site (so hopefully they checked us out!).

Anyway, after my lunch, I finally tried the cupcake and I must say it was very moist and spongey. It was definitely good and tasty and I for sure want to try more of their flavors again soon! I looked them up recently to find out more on their business and they are just like Flirty's that go around Chicago at certain times, different for each week (you can look up their schedule at their website: http://www.cupcakesforcourage.com/schedule.html).

So wondering why they are called, "Cupcake for Courage"? Well Cupcakes for Courage is the brain child of Kathryn and Laura Pekarik, two sisters that share the same passion for baking and want to share that passion with the world one cupcake at a time. Kathryn was dianosed with non-hodgkins t-cell lymphoma in May of 2010, and later that year had held a benefit to help raise money for her costs of medical care. Laura held a bake sale and baked 250 cupcakes at the event. After that they decided it was a great idea to bake cupcakes while also raising money for cancer. It's a very touching story and I love the story behind it! To find out more, again visit their site at Cupcakes for Courage.

Oh and also exciting! Someone ordered cupcakes from us! So Melanie and I will be busy baking all summer long! If you guys would like to order something, please let us know the flavor, amount, and time needed it by. We would love to bake for you.. Afterall, that is what we do best! :)

Until next time,
Nancy <3

Crummy

Hi all,
I'm sorry I know have been slacking lately. Even with all the craziness going on for the past month, I should have still been able to take 10 minutes of my time to update the site. I feel horrible and I am sincerely sorry. Now with that in the open we can get straight into business...
Back in the beginning of February, my roommate, Nancy and I met up with our dear friends Marcel and Eric to try out some new cupcakes. That particular day was freezing cold outside and we all ended up on a journey to find Crumbs Bakery. Crumbs Bakery is a new cupcake spot located on 303 W Madison St. Luckily we all happened to bump into each other on the street while searching for the bakery. It was almost seemed impossible to find, especially due to the ice cold weather. Eventually we found the small shop which was located a few stores away from The Cupcake Counter, another cupcake bakery.
When we got inside we were in awe by the fabulously decorated cupcakes. The cupcakes came in "signature" size, which was a little above average, and then "colossal" which was a huge cupcake cake.

Free Cupcakes for ALL!!!

Did you know that Sprinkles Cupcakes gives away free cupcakes every day? If you type in “Sprinkles Cupcakes” in the search box on Facebook, you will find Sprinkles’ page - www.facebook.com/sprinkles (also works on Twitter). Each day, around noon time (most likely) they post a new status up about receiving a free cupcake for the first 10th, 25th or even 50th customer to whisper a certain word at any Sprinkles location. If you are one of those lucky participants, you are granted a free cupcake.

Yep, that’s right; it definitely reels in the same customers coming back for more – true statement. With that being said, even as busy as we are, Melanie and I have found time to stop by Sprinkles for a free treat. I swear, probably half our time trying Sprinkles already has been free. Well it also doesn’t help that Melanie and I work a block away from the Sprinkles location!!!!! I think we have gone Sprinkles Crazy! I didn’t think it wasn’t that great, but now I kind of like it! :-)

Anyways, Melanie and I actually made some Halloween cupcakes recently and let’s just say.. it didn’t go very well! :-O I think it’s been way too long since we’ve made cupcakes from scratch! People, who did get a chance to try them, said they liked it and others said they didn’t. But they were for sure not our best ones! Oh well, everyone has their bad days.

We do want to make holiday cupcakes, and we sure will once our holiday break begins! It’s crazy to think of how fast this semester flew by, Melanie is actually almost done with this semester. So be excited that we will have more free time to upload videos and posts soon! Sorry guys!!! But we will definitely keep the updates consistent this time! :-) Okay well I think that is it for now..

PS- YOU CAN ORDER cupcakes, just let us know. We would love to make some for you!

Until next time,

A Bitter Ending

Hey Everyone!

Hope you all are having a great start to the fall season. So recently we have posted a status on our facebook page asking which bakery we should go to next. We got some great suggestions and decided to take Amanda's suggestion to go to Bittersweet Bakery. Originally Nancy and I were going to go on her birthday, but since I am going to make her an awesome cake, we didn't want to eat too much desserts in one day and choose to go last Saturday.

We were very excited to try Bittersweet because we heard great things about them. When we arrived, we were looking at all the pretty cookies and treats they had. Our favorite design was a cookie shaped and decorated as a pink poodle! I noticed that were numbers we were suppose to pick up, kind of like when you are at deli. I picked up numbers for Nancy and I while we were still trying to decide from the only three cupcake options they had. The workers kept asking Nancy and I if we were ready and seemed a little annoyed that we were taking a while to make up our mind. Nancy choose a banana cupcake and I went for the chocolate peanut truffle cupcake.

Now, what I didn't mention earlier is this place isn't just a bakery, they also serve a limited lunch so the place was more like a cafe. The lady asked if we were going to eat there or take it to go, and of course we wanted to eat there. We had a wait for them to clear off the empty tables because they were still full of dirty dishes and TIP... Okay I understand that people will tip for the lunch, but all the workers had to do for us was put the pre-made cupcake on a plate and set it down in front of us. So honestly we felt like we shouldn't have tipped them.

But anyways back to the cupcakes, Nancy's was basically banana bread shaped as a cupcake. Nancy really liked it, but to me it wasn't much of a cupcake although her frosting was a lot better than mine. My cupcake was a chocolate cake with super artificial vanilla frosting. The texture of the frosting was very distinctive and had like a slimy coating. It's hard to explain but it's like the same type of frosting that Swirlz cupcakes use. The frosting had no real flavor. The only peanut flavor in my cupcake was from a huge hard truffle that was in the middle of my cupcake. To say the least, I was not pleased with this cupcake. However, I really want to try something else from them, possibly their cookies.

When the "waitress" dropped off our check, we walked to the counter to pay. The cashier asked if we are putting the tip on our card. At first Nancy and I decided we weren't going to tip at all but after the cashier was asking us, it made us feel uncomfortable and rude if we didn't leave anything, even though they did not deserve it. We both ended up giving a dollar tip each, so the total amount for our cupcakes was over $4!!!

So what I want to know is what do you guys think about tipping them? Should we have just said no or did they deserve to get tip? Let us know your thoughts!

Lastly, we want to make a shout out to James for making us this cool picture(inserted below) for our site in honor of Nancy's 21st birthday coming up. We love the quote and we totally are going to us it! Ahh can't wait for Nancy's birthday!!

Till next time,

Not everything is going to taste good.

Melanie and I have finally moved into the city!! Yay! With school being around the corner and all, Melanie and I made some time to stop by a few cupcake places such as Phoebe's, Sprinkles, Sweet Mandi B's and Flirty's Cupcakes. Yeah, I know that's quite a lot, considering we've only been here for a week or so... but what can we say we're cupcake obsessed! :)

So by the look of my caption.... I was pretty disappointed in all 4 bakeries. I say this because each treat I ate tasted horrible!

First we'll start with Phoebe's Cupcakes. I was around the area when I decided to stop in at Phoebe's Cupcakes. To be honest, Phoebe's Cupcakes isn't really one of my favorite cupcake places that I've tried. But anyway, I was deciding between the chocolate cupcake or the banana cream pie cupcake. Since I always choose chocolate cupcakes, I decided why not try something new this time so I go with the banana one. Once I got home, I was all excited to try it and my first bite was rather disappointing. The cupcake tasted very artificial, almost like a 'banana' flavored Laffy Taffy (if you guys have tried it before). The icing was actually good but I felt like it was too much. You definitely can taste the banana flavored but it was too much flavor.

Next we had Sprinkles. Melanie had stopped by the other day and bought cupcakes: chocolate marshmallow and lemon cupcake. She let me choose from the two and I chose the lemon cupcake. We'll start off with the chocolate marshmallow cupcake.. This cupcake was chocolate cake with chocolate icing and a marshmallow in the center. It was pretty good but we thought it tasted like a hostess cake. It was way too sweet and definitely not appetizing. Mine however, was nice and moist except for the cake part was very bland and the icing was really thick. I felt like the frosting is what GAVE the cake the flavor though.

Literally the next day we went to Sweet Mandi B's, but this time instead of getting the normal cupcake treat; we agreed to try their ice cream. Ice cream seriously sounded so good at the time and we thought it would be a great treat to refresh ourselves on a hot day. Their ice cream is new, so we decided to give it a try. When we arrived, we noticed that they had added more chairs and new decor to the room. It was very colorful with light colors surrounding the room (pics will be up soon). On the side of the wall, there is a list of flavors to choose from, I'll name a few... Banana Chocolate Chip, Cookie Dough, Cookies & Cream, Mint Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Marshmallow, etc. Melanie chose the Mint Chocolate Chip, I chose the Cookies & Cream, and our friend Connie chose the Cookie Dough ice cream. All sound delicious right? Well looks may be deceiving because the taste was awful. The Cookies & Cream that I chose, was too bland and tasted more like cheesecake. Melanie's choice (Mint Chocolate Chip) was rather too minty!!! At first we were like yours is definitely the best, but then we came to a conclusion that it was wayy too much mint. To the point where her throat started burning after finishing her ice cream. So lay off the mint? And Connie's... Cookie Dough choice was the worst one out of all of ours. Hers tasted like Smuckers lip gloss, no JOKE! First thing after tasting the first bite, that had come to my mind. I don't know if you guys know what Smuckers is but it seriously felt like the lip gloss was on your tongue and you were eating it. The texture was very dense and "lip gloss" like. It just overall tasted horrible and one scoop of ice cream is pretty pricey!!!! It costs us approximately $3.50 for ONE SCOOP that wasn't even WORTH it. Ew. Never again, maybe they should please just stick to selling baked goods. Or maybe taste test it first. Because if I was Connie and I chose the cookie dough flavor I would totally take it back.

So last but not least today I finally got a chance to try Flirty's Cupcakes once again. The truck had stopped in front of our store tonight, and my manager let me go get some cupcakes for everyone. When I got there of course they had the flavor that I wanted sold out (the 'Mcdreamy'). So instead I chose the 'Curious George' cupcake which is basically a banana flavored cupcake. Um... what to say about this cupcake? Well first of all everyone agreed that the frosting was again very dense and thick, which is true because I remember the last cupcake I got the frosting was like it too. And not only that, but for some reason the frosting on mine was very SALTY??? It was seriously saltier than french fries. But it tasted weird because salt and sweet together does not mix well at least I don't think so. The cake part did not have a banana flavor at all either. It tasted more like chocolate cake. Eww, I just can't get over the fact that the frosting was so salty, like I had to scrape off all the frosting in order to finish it. The cupcake itself is tiny, so it was definitely not satisfying. Wow, it's funny because just last month I was saying how I LOVED Flirty's Cupcakes better than Sprinkles. I change my mind, I'm not a fan of either. Sprinkles is pretty much overrated for what it's worth. I know all the 'celebs' order from there, but so what? It's not that great honestly. Ah I feel like I wasted my time and money towards unappetizing treats. However "not everything is going to taste good," -- true STATEMENT.

So this is a long blog entry, I know... SORRY. There was just too much to say. I have a few questions for you guys to respond to:
1) What cupcake place out of these places have you tried and what did you think of them?
2) Tell us a horrible tasting experience you've had.
3) Do you agree with this article? If yes, why?

Okay before making this 10 pages long, Melanie and I finally had our FIRST cupcake order and what I mean is we actually got PAID this time. My friend had ordered from us and we spent all night making them. He asked us to make chocolate cupcakes but we decided to mix things up a bit and make s`mores cupcakes instead. I'll keep it short and say that they really enjoyed it supposedly and said we should make our own business cards! It's coincidental because I literally just ordered some last weekend! How exciting right? We also will be posting up a video on the making of s`mores and will be also be creating an order form for the website. Technically, you guys can order from us now. Just name the flavor, amount and time we'll do it! :) So order away!!! Okay I'm done.

Big Blue!

So guess what?!!! I was in Chicago last weekend and I finally had a chance to try Flirty's Cupcakes!!!!! The day before I checked on Facebook what Flirty's route would be that week and luckily they were going to be nearby my work, which was in front of the Bloomingdales Home Store (2 min walk). When I got to work I was hoping to God that my break would be around that time they were going to be there, and luckily it was! All day I was definitely looking forward to my break, I was so anxious because I'm not going to lie I've been dying to try their cupcakes! When 3 PM came around, my coworker Tal asked if I wanted to hangout during break (little did she know about my cupcake passion). Of course I told her about it, and she had the wonderful experience of trying it with me. We both chose the "Devil in Disguise," which is the red velvet cupcake and they costed $3.25 each. You can check out some pictures that I took in our Flickr gallery on the right side. I really wanted to try the banana flavored, but by the time we got there they had been sold out! :( I also was very indecisive because I've heard people say that the McDreamy and the Peanut Butter cupcakes were the best ones. Oh well maybe next time for sure!

I felt as if the cupcake was smaller than most cupcakes that I've tried. But honestly, I didn't care because the cupcake overall was seriously one of the best cupcakes I've ever eaten in my life. I'm not going to lie, but HANDS down for sure Flirty's Cupcakes are WAY more tastier than Sprinkles Cupcakes. Why, you ask? Well... first of all, this small cupcake had so much flavor and it was definitely very moist and soft. It was topped with the usual, cream cheese frosting and red sprinkles. The frosting also had so much flavor in it, you can totally recognize it was cream cheese for sure. I mean both the cupcake and the frosting had a lot of flavor and texture to it. I know that sounds weird, but most places that I've been to, I felt like the frosting was the one thing that gave the cupcake the flavor and not the cupcake itself. Flirty's has to be the best red velvet cupcake so far. They have my VOTE at least! :) Now I understand why my manager at work would always order them! Ah! Flirty's, I would definitely recommend to everyone who hasn't tried many cupcake places in Chicago. Hunt them down!!! They are so WORTH IT. Once again, you can look up their routes on facebook.com/flirtycupcakes or twitter.com/flirtycupcakes. I can't wait to try some more, I'm going to see if they are going to be around work again this weekend. I really hope so :).

Oh and Melanie finally had a chance to taste Sprinkles last weekend too! Her mom and her had went, and she bought dark chocolate Sprinkles cake mix! :) Stay tuned for more information on her visit!

After last Friday (when I tried Flirtys), everyone at work found out my obssession with cupcakes and they are looking forward to me bringing cupcakes for them. So the "KrazyforKupcake" girls are at it again, we are going back to work in the kitchen and baking more cupcakes! Lovvve it.

Sprinkles Cupcakes!!!

What is new and has dots all over? ...Sprinkles Cupcakes! Yupp... that's right, I finally had a chance to check out the talk of the town's famous cupcake place! Unfortunately, our other 'Krazy for Kupcake's' girl Melanie couldn't come with me, but a few of my good friends (Sarah & Karen) volunteered to share this wonderful experience with me! Here's a video of what went down: Enjoy!

As you can see, I bought four cupcakes: Strawberry, Cherry, Key Lime & Dark Chocolate. The two flavors Cherry & Key Lime are their summer flavors, which they stop selling on August 1, so I had to get them before they were gone! Each cupcake costed $3.25.

I was pretty excited to go scope out the new cupcake place! I was pretty upset that Melanie couldn't join me in my trip because we've been LITERALLY counting down the days until Sprinkles came to town. It opened last Monday, the 26th of July. And when we visited the line was REALLY long. We waited in line almost for an HOUR. Luckily we made it in time before it closed (at 7 PM). But anyway, once we got inside, the place looked really colorful and very modern. They had a glass window for a display of each cupcake flavor, kind of like More's Cupcakes.

What I thought of the cupcakes? Well, they were of course good. Each cupcake was very moist, just the way I like it and the frosting was very smooth and definitely gave the cupcake more flavor. My favorite cupcake out of the four I chose was definitely the cherry! Awe, too bad it's not going to be there anymore... But at least I had a chance to try it! The key lime was my second favorite, those two I would have to say had the most flavor. The dark chocolate was a tad bit TOO sweet for me and the strawberry wasn't the best. Each cupcake was topped with a sugary dot candy for their signature. Also they put a different dotted color on each cupcake to represent the flavor.

Overall, the place was pretty good. I'm not going to lie, I still think Molly's Cupcakes are the best so far. Sprinkles is up there, BUT they aren't as creative as Molly's. Sprinkles cupcakes kind of taste like Sugar Bliss Bakery off of Wabash Ave. Both places have the same tastes/textures in their cupcake and frosting. I still thought it was delicious, and I would definitely go again! Like Sarah said, the staff was super super friendly too!

But yeah, now that I've had a chance to try Sprinkles... time to hunt down FLIRTY's CUPCAKES!!!!!!!

Until next time...

ENJOY :) Tune in tonight - MOLLY'S CUPCAKES ARE ON CUPCAKE WARS!!!!

Love you :)

Scratch.....Disaster?

Ah, one by one the good ol' summer days go by... Sooner or later time will past and Melanie and I will be back living in the Chi! I, on one end am impatiently waiting until that day comes! Anyhoo, Melanie and I have kept our summers busy by making more and more cupcakes!! I know, exciting right? We kept our promises and finally tried making cupcakes from scratch. Last Sunday we promised my cousin that we would bake cupcakes for her graduation party. We asked her what kind she wanted, and she told us red velvet, so we did. Additionally, Melanie and I decided to create two extra flavors, and these would be the ones we would make from scratch. Can you guess which flavors these were? Well we wanted to make one that would be common to eat and also one that you guys selected based off the 'next flavor' poll on the side. Those of you who DID vote and helped us out, we really appreciate it!!! =)

Okay, so I'll just tell you... We ended up making Vanilla Caramel and Peanut Butter cupcakes. Sounds delish right? We thought so too. Melanie and I planned to make these cupcakes last Sunday before her party... But unfortunately Melanie found out she had to work that day. We had no other alternative day to make them because I had to work the day before. So therefore, we planned to split the cupcake making and do it separately. Let me tell you it was a TON of work. You wouldn't believe how long it took each of us to make them... Since Mel had all the cupcake ingredients at her house; she had to make the two cupcakes from scratch on her own. I on the other hand, only had to make the red velvet cupcakes from the box but also had to make the finishing touches of the cupcakes (toppings, decor). A total estimate of the time it took us to make these cupcakes on our own was approximately 6-7 hours!!!! Ugh.

Luckily, on Friday (6/25/2010) we already made the frosting from each cupcake so that saved us some time. We actually videotaped a few shots of us making the frosting, which will soon be posted! :) Overall, the cupcakes turned out... Well let's just say since it was our first times making it from scratch, it wasn't our best. But hey, everybody makes mistakes and learn from them right? We'll make sure the next homemade cupcake will be superb! My cousin "claims" that they were great, but we just think she's being too kind!! (Just teasing, Lisa!) We just wished they turned out a tad bit better.... Our biggest problem is how to avoid making a cupcake DRY? But we will be posting up pics and videos on that cupcake process. So keep intune!!!!

Our next creation is definitely going to be the Strawberry Champayne cupcake!!! Now that will be tasty! Melanie and I vowed that we will never make cupcakes without each other ever again!!! It was a horrible experience, and is no fun without a buddy there making it with you! :)

Cupcake Craze !

Hi to the few that actually read our blogs ;-)

It almost seems like the country is in a cupcake craze. Most stores I walk in, I see cupcake merchandise everywhere (Forever 21, Victoria's Secret, and Target to name a few). Some restaurants are even coming out with cupcakes. Nancy and I were at the mall this week and we saw that Cinnabon had cupcakes. It was very unexpected. Surprisingly they sell individual cupcakes as well as packages. It is not typical for a non-cupcake place to sell their cupcakes individually, ie Coldstone. There were only four flavors to choose from: 24 carrot cake, vanilla bliss, chocolate passion, and cinnamon classic. I choose the vanilla bliss and Nancy had the cinnamon classic. These cupcakes were loaded with frosting. I'm pretty sure that the icing is like the kind that is used for the cinnamon rolls.

The cupcakes were good, but they were not extraordinary. The texture was like of a normal cupcake that could be store bought. The cupcakes that we make are definitely more moist and soft, but I wasn't really having high expectations since Cinnabon is'nt a bakery. Nancy's cupcake tasted just like a cinnamon roll and my cupcake had a fourth of July theme because it was decorated with red and blue sprinkles. The cupcakes were very reasonably priced, so Nancy and I will be back there to try the other two flavors.

Another place where cupcakes are taking over is on tv. So it has come to our attention that on the food network there is a new series called "Cupcake Wars". It premiered on Tuesday. I finally cleared it off my dvr tonight. Let me say I absolutely loved it! If only Nancy and I could be judges on it. So if Food Network happens to stumble across our blog, PLEASE give us a show or let us judge on "Cupcake Wars". On the show, four cupcake bakery owners compete in three challenges (judging was based on taste and presentation) to win. I am excited to see how the rest of the season pans out because I am still a bit unsure of how the series works. I hope a Chicago baker owner ends up in one of the episodes.

One thing we don't get is how cupcakes are so popular, yet no one wants to comment on our site. So come on Chicagoans...Go out there and try a cupcake or comment on our site and go CUPCAKE CRAZY with the rest of the country!!! Please comment on our blogs, pics and chat box. Also, vote on our poll. We want feedback on what you think about our site and blogs, and you can always mention any cupcake news. We would love to hear from you!

Love lots,

Kupcakes all the time!

Last week, I (Nancy) had stayed in Chicago for a few days at Melanie's apartment. During the time I stayed there, (like I said before) Melanie and I baked some lemon flavored cupcakes! In these lemon cupcakes we decided to add blueberries in the center as the filling, and on top we spread on some cream cheese frosting with cute "summery" themed decor. I gotta admit, these cupcakes were DELICIOUS! We both agreed that these lemon cupcakes were definitely our most favorite ones we've made so far. We also believe that each cupcake we make keeps getting yummier and yummier! =) Who knows what we'll think of next?! It was so yummy, we could not stop eating them. I swear I probably gained like 5 extra pounds this weekend!!

Melanie and I had been invited to attend this Akira event on State St. off the Red Line. This event was called the "Pink Pedi Pamper Party," and at the event they offered free pedicures, eyebrow waxing, 20% purchases, and of course free desserts from Krazy Kakes (this cake company). Not only were we excited to hear about the free pedicures and eyebrow waxing, but we were more excited to try what kind of desserts the Krazy Kakes would serve. Plus their company name is almost similar to our name too, which is SUCH a coincidence!!! So on Thursday (May 27th, 2010), we attended this event. As we entered, there was plenty of other girls that surrounded the area. We saw that they were just setting up the event, so we decided to browse the store as we waited. Melanie and I did find a pair of shoes that we really liked, so as we were standing in the line to pay we saw a lady carrying a huge tray of pink.....CUPCAKES! Yes I said it, they were colored in PINK. Our eyes quickly came attached to this tall display filled with delicious looking cupcakes. At this point, we were dying to taste them. We finally purchased our shoes, and started to head towards where the cupcakes were. The bakery lady was in the middle of finishing the display, as we walked by. We asked her if we can take one, and she told us not until she explains to us what the different flavors were. Good deal. As she named each one, I was contemplating on which one to try. Melanie went first and she chose one called the "upsidedown pineapple." It was a vanilla cake topped with pineapple flavored frosting. I must say, it was very creative!!! Never tasted anything like that before. I decided to get the "carmel vanilla," vanilla cupcake topped with carmel frosting. I loved mine, it was such a perfect choice. Each cupcake came with a cute shoe decor on top (since this Akira is a shoe store). Ah, it was seriously fabulous. Melanie and I were definitely satisfied, and wanted more! But we wanted to let the other customers give it a try. However, before leaving the store, Melanie and I agreed that we should share and try another cupcake. So we grabbed the lemon flavored cupcake. This cupcake had a thick jelly-like topping. It wasn't anything we tried before, but it was delish that's for sure. We wanted to also try the lemon kind so we can compare from the ones that we made. We would have to say they tied. Haha.

For more information on this Krazy Kakes Bakery, I believe they are new and are just opening up near the South Side? For more information you can go to www.krazykakehouse.com. I think this place is mainly a cake place. Their website is very interesting! Turn up your speakers, they have a very unique song to hear! :)
That's it for now. I will definitely post pictures up soon!

Fox & Obel Market

Howdy! The other day Melanie and I made an unexpected trip to a new place on our list! We were around the downtown area, eating at Bubba Gump at Navy Pier! It was our first times there, and it was pretty pricey but was definitely worth it! If you guys didn't already know, Bubba Gump is a restaurant based off the Forrest Gump movie. Anyways, back to the story... Melanie and I were going to stop by Dominicks to pick up some brownie mix when we came across a bakery on our list. Can you guess? Fox & Obel Market! This place isn't specifically for just a bakery of goods, but it's also a food market. I must say entering this place was quite confusing. When you first enter, there are two doors... one that opens to a mini cafe and the other door, not too sure. We decided to choose the one towards the cafe, and to our surprise there was the market! We walked aimlessly through the aisles, until finally we came across the bakery! In the bakery there were various options to choose from: cookies, muffins, donuts, tarts, and of course cupcakes! Since this was a bakery, there were only a few selection of cupcakes: chocolate, red velvet, carrot and butter cake flavored. I was indecisive whether to buy a cookie or try their cupcakes. Of course, in the end I chose to order a cupcake and Melanie chose a chocolate chip cookie. Can you guess what cupcake I bought? Well you should already know by now..... CHOCOLATE! =) It was made from Devil's cake, and topped with chocolate frosting and white and chocolate chips on top. The cupcake price was only $2.99, which was a great deal considering the cupcake size was bigger than most places. Melanie's chocolate chip cookie costed $1.99 and was big also. Both desserts were pretty good. The cupcake was not as moist and more on the dry side. Without the chocolate frosting, the cupcake would taste really bland. The cookie was a bit hard and crunchy. As you can see, Melanie and I rather prefer our cookies to be soft and chewy. Fox and Obel Market has high prices on their items, but they sell items that you normally can't find at a regular grocery store. Overall, the experience was pretty pleasant. We weren't expecting too much from it since it was an unplanned visit. But maybe if we are around the area, we'll make a second stop and try out the other desserts! The fruit tart, I must say looked rather delicious!

On the side note-

We originally wanted to see if Sprinkles cupcakes were opened, but unfortunately we aren't exactly sure when the exact date of it may open. We looked it up on several websites on Google, but each result was a different date? If anyone knows or has any information on Sprinkles cupcakes please post here! =)

The school year ended for ME and Melanie only has a few more weeks left! How sad! We will for sure try to visit some places over the summer, if not we definitely will when school starts again!

<3 much love K4K

My hiatus is over =) (May 10, 2010)

Yes, that is right! I accomplished a MONTH without desserts. After the very long month, I was eager to try some cupcakes. I wanted to not only have a cupcake, but to try out a new cupcake place. So yesterday(Sunday) Nancy and I hopped on the bus to go to Bleeding Heart Bakery. We were both excited to explore a new bakery. Right away, I could see that this wasn't an ordinary cupcake shop. The shop had an alternative theme with tattoos and skulls. In front of the bakery there was a sign that said "Organic Bakery" and indeed the bakery was true to their words. Most of the cupcakes were vegan, and I noticed that they used organic milk for all of their other products. It is a bakery, so they offer cupcakes, cakes, doughnuts, cookies, bars and various of other things to satisfy your sweet tooth. Nancy and I got there at the right time. We still had a long wait, about 7 minutes, but shortly after we sat down to eat, the bakery filled up with a ton more people. I swear the line did not move for almost 10 minutes. Nancy ordered the chocolate peanut butter and I got the chocolate raspberry. Both of the cupcakes were chocolate but Nancy's came with a peanut butter frosting while mine had raspberry frosting. The cupcakes were pretty cheap ($2.75) which is a plus, and if you want to get the more elaborate cupcake flavors, it's only $3.25. We grabbed some metal spoons, which I understand they don't want to be wasteful in providing plasticware however some spoons seemed dirty. Luckily, the cupcake made up for the lack in proper silverware and our moderate wait in line. We agreed the cupcake itself wasn't too special but I thought the frosting was one of the best that we've had so far. The cupcake was moist and the frosting was just the right amount of sweetness and tons of flavor. Overall the cupcakes were good but the place felt a little bit dirty, perhaps because it was a small shop with overcrowding decor. And I was not too crazy about waiting in line for so long. At least Nancy and I could say that we have been there, I am just not sure if we will return.

In other news, SPRINKLES is opening up in Chicago very soon and guess who will be one of the first customers?? We are dying to try west coasts best cupcakes! Unfortunately the website does not have the exact date on when they will be opening up.

You'll hear from us very soon,

Melanie

We are so unsuccessful but still achievers! (May 3, 2010)

The school year is coming to an end, and it’s sad to say that our site wasn’t such a huge success. However, as much as we tried our best we still accomplished one thing, and that was trying most of Chicagoland’s greatest cupcake places. We are very unfortunate but at the same time it was fun. We didn’t let one thing get in our way, besides our main goal was to have a taste of each place that Chicago had to offer. We didn’t get around to visit all the cupcake places we listed in our ‘Locations’ tab, but we did our best and that is all that matters. This year may be ending but we still have the summer and of course next year! We have time, and maybe someday our dream will come true.

Anyways, Melanie has not been to a cupcake place in a while due to her giving up “sweets” for a month! ICK! I on the other end was supposed to join that pledge too but I couldn’t do it. I just couldn’t. Sweets are my addiction, maybe someday I will give it up but not soon! So while she is on her little mission, I went to two cupcake places since I’ve last updated. I went to Phoebe’s and Molly’s Cupcakes. Both were very delicious and have good things to say about them.

One. Phoebe’s Cupcakes were way better this time. It’s funny because they definitely took my comment on YELP.com seriously. I didn’t think they read that stuff, but I had posted a comment about them a while back and they took my comment into consideration. I basically wrote how the first time I went that the cupcakes tasted like dog food!! But because of that I think was the cupcakes used to be next to the “pupcakes” in the display case. So when I went there for my second time, I saw that the “pupcakes” were placed in a separate shelf. When I was at Phoebe’s I had tried the Peanut Butter Fudgy Brownie and my friend Sarah got the Very Vanilla. They were both scrumptious but we definitely agreed mine was better. Mine had chocolate cake and peanut butter frosting on top. Sarah’s is very explanatory, given the name. It had vanilla cake with vanilla frosting and since it was around Easter time, they included an Egg non edible décor. And of course, to answer anyone’s question the cupcakes DID NOT taste like dog food this time. J However I wouldn't say that place is as good as Sweet Mandi B’s or Molly’s.

Two. I recently went to Molly’s Cupcakes last weekend because I was already in the area. Funny thing is I went to Molly’s with the same friend, Sarah. She’s never been there before so it was pretty exciting! I decided to order something that I already have tasted and one that is my most favorite, the ‘Cookies and Cream’ one. To refresh your memory, this one is a chocolate cake with a chocolate filling inside. It also is topped with chocolate frosting, whipped cream and of course a half oreo to top it off! No wonder I love it so much, such a chocolate-lover treat! Sarah tried the ‘Cookie Monster’, again my 2nd most favorite cupcake at Molly’s. And simply, it’s a chocolate chip cake with cookie dough in the center. It’s topped with whipped cream and chocolate chip pieces. Seriously to die for, you must try! Sarah thought this place so cute, and everything is so orderly there, including the employees! The whole environment is so fun and friendly, just the way I like it.
Well that is all for now, but hopefully Melanie’s little promise will end soon so we can get a chance to try new places. Catch a later guys!

If you haven’t already, please tell your cupcake lover friends about our site! And it would be excellent if you guys comment on our blogs, pictures, anything! It would literally make our day and it will be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much.

Much Love, Nancy

Update! (March 9, 2009)

Hey there!

Long time since we written, but in the last few months Melanie and I have been extremely busy and decided to just revisit certain places. Sadly, our flyer distribution plan didn’t really work out the way we planned. Our goal was to target our right audience and by doing so, advertise our site at actual Chicago cupcake locations. We only had a chance to go to a few, and out of all of them, Molly’s was the one that accepted our ads. We were extremely excited and looking forward to get our site out there, but from the looks of it, it doesn’t look like we accomplished anything. However, we still have a lot more places and chances to advertise, and even if we don’t accomplish it at least we can say we tried. We’re not going to let our hopes down, as long as we are able to visit all the Chicago cupcake locations, we will be satisfied. That’s basically what we wanted anyways. If anyone of you are reading this, and you know any cupcake lovers out there, please help us and refer this site to them.

So far since we last updated, Melanie and I have visited two places – Mrs. A’s Cupcakes and Sweet Mandi B’s. I know that isn’t a lot, but we still have a couple months left of this semester so we have time. No rush.

Those of you who’ve never heard of Mrs. A’s Cupcakes, well, it’s a dessert place at the Old Orchard Mall. If you have read previous posts, I have visited that place once before. It’s located right next to Red Robin and near the Nordstrom department store. Anyway, Melanie and I planned on shopping that weekend and she wanted to try this place, so we took the yellow line down there. From my experience, I didn’t really enjoy this place too much. Not only did the cupcake taste like cake mix, but the employees that worked there were rude. This time, there were more people working and that same lady that I was rude last time, was there too. Sadly, she was being rude again but the other workers actually tried making small conversations with us. I had ordered the red velvet cupcake and Melanie ordered “Kylie’s Favorite Cupcake.” Since it was Superbowl weekend, her cupcake came with a football decoration on top. Melanie’s cupcake was made with yellow cake and topped with chocolate icing, as well as black sprinkles around the rim. As for mine, it was topped with thick vanilla frosting and sprinkled with red sprinkles. I enjoyed mine, it was moist and tasty but I wasn’t able to finish it because it was too sweet. Melanie didn’t really like hers due to it being dry and unappetizing. This place isn’t really specifically for cupcakes because they have only four flavors to choose from. I would say it’s more of a cookie and dessert place instead. Also if you plan on going here, there is no place to sit and eat. It’s a very tiny place; you have a choice of standing and eating it outside or to go in the food court.

Recently, we revisited Sweet Mandi B’s, which by the way their new extra room has now opened. It’s really cute and gives customers more of an opportunity to sit down and enjoy their dessert. Since we had just got done eating dinner, we decided to go to Mandi B’s for dessert. As usual, I ordered a cupcake called “Banana cupcake,” while Melanie chose to try their Snickerdoodle cookie. The cookie was delicious and mine was great too. Mine tasted just like banana bread; it was moist and absolutely scrumptious. It had also been topped with chocolate icing and white chocolate chips. Ah, how we love Sweet Mandi B’s! Just talking about this, makes me want to go eat a cupcake now! Their new room edition not only adds on to the place, but now they offer ice cream, which we will soon try one day.

But anyway, we can’t stress enough but we really would love to see more comments on our blogs so we are aware people actually read this thing! If not, that’s fine…. Our mission is to try and visit all of the Chicagoland places! Wish us luck! J

Long time no talk! (January 6, 2009)

Hey guys! How's it going, it's definitely been a while since we've updated. Happy New Year by the way, Melanie and I have made a new year's resolution to try and visit more cupcake places for the remainder time we are here in Chicago! Oh and to make our site "the next big thing"! With break ending and all, Melanie and I finally got a chance to make our first stop of the year at a cupcake place. We first decided on heading to Sweet Mandi B's to check out their new edition, but unfortunately since we were already around the shopping area on Diversey, the only cupcake place near to us was Molly's. We've been to Molly's several times before, so we agreed on ordering new flavors. With that being said, Melanie ordered a cupcake called "Turtle" and I ordered one called "Mighty Mint". Both were extremely delicious, but very sweet. The Turtle cupcake was a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and nuts on top. Now, I adored Mel's cupcake.. that is because I am a big fan of chocolate! =) Melanie thought it was too sweet for her likings lol. The cupcake was very moist (two thumbs up) and inside had some delicious carmel. For my cupcake, "Mighty Mint"...the name pretty much explains it all. Mine was very minty! I would definitely have to consider it for the holiday season lol. The Mighty Mint was a chocolate cake with a mint flavored frosting, which included an Andes candy on top! Perfect, I must say! =) My cupcake was also very moist and had a mint flavored liquor in the middle. Each cupcake costs $3.75.

Oh and for some more news-

Melanie and I have been having a hard time with publishing our site and having people leave feedback or anyone taking us seriously. We are SERIOUS if you don't like this site, then LEAVE! We really want the RIGHT viewers to view our site! With that being said, we created flyers for our cupcake site and will soon contribute it out and target the right audience! But if you are reading this and actually love cupcakes, it would be greatly appreciated if you would refer our site to friends, family, anyone who is interested. Like I said before, our new year's resolution hopefully will be accomplished and become successful! Otherwise, thank you guys for taking the time to check out our site! Please leave comments, posts, and overall feedback.

Thank you-
Nancy & Melanie

Blissful Day (November 10, 2009)

Since Sunday was such a nice day in Chicago (in the 70's!) I decided to put my homework aside and meet up with Nancy downtown. At first we couldn't decide if we would go to a new cupcake place or revisit a place we have already been to. We came to the conclusion to visit Sugar Bliss Cake Boutique again. I took a video this time =). I'm still working on the editing so please be patient, but I hope you all will be looking forward to that. This time Nancy and I tried different cupcakes from the first time we went there. We did get there around 30mins before closing so we didn't have that much options. I got the supposedly famous Orange Creamsicle cupcake and Nancy got the Chocolate Peanut Butter. Both cupcakes were delicious! It was still on the very sweet side but very satisfying. Sugar Bliss hasn't failed us yet!
